Help: Pilgrim Tercentenary Celebration Half Dollar

2 Attachment(s)
My aunt and uncle asked me to look into this coin for them. I had never heard of them. It is a 1920 Pilgrim Tercentenary Celebration half dollar.

Apparently it is one of the first commemorative coins, as those were unusual back in 1920.

Does anyone know anything about this coin? It is not in terrible shape, though it is circulated and a bit worn on the high spots. The coin in my possession (not the one pictured) also has a fairly significant ding on the rim up top.

Does it have any numismatic value? Before I saw this one I had never heard of them.

Can anyone help with info on this coin?

Much thanks,
gpond :rose:

To commemorate the landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth Mass. in 1620, congress authorized a special half dollar May 12,1920. Cyrus E. Dallin, a Boston sculptor, executed the designs. His initial D is placed below Bradford's elbow. Obverse Governor Bradford the reverse is the Mayflower.

The first issue had no date on the obverse. The coin struck in 1921 show a date in addition to 1620 - 1920. There was a large coinage of both issues and not all were sold. A total of 128,000 were returned to the mint and melted.

Thanks, WAoG!

That was a pretty good investment for my uncle who probably received it for face value at his gas station that he ran for many years.

He also has a bunch of silver dollars and some small amount of 90% quarters. He was asking me how to get rid of them, but I urged him to keep them as they should keep going up (and they don't need the money)... But he can't see them getting more valuable, to him they are just sitting there like something that needs to be dealt with. My aunt will listen to me though, and told me I should tell her when to sell them. They really don't amount to much, but I'm hoping they hang on to them for a while.

I am tempted to buy this Pilgrim Celebration coin from them, though, because it is so unusual. I have never seen anything like it before, but maybe I just don't get out much.

You are welcome. Nice coin. I would keep it. Shame its not the 1921 only 20,053 of them, if that.

Hey, GPond:

Beautiful coin you have there. Definitely keep it! As Waog has written it has significant numismatist value. $80 is retail value for AU condition. A dealer will offer you less. He has to make some profit too.

What is interesting about commemorative coins, and there are a lot of them out there is these were also spent as money, since the cost was the face value (not positive on that, but a lot of them were in circulation). Here is a link to the Pilgrim Commem. You can also search this site for all the other commems from 1854 to 1935, both gold and silver.

Thanks, TGA.

The one I have is not as nice as the pictures I supplied - my uncle's has more wear. So, yes it was definitely circulated. But it is an interesting coin.
